Thank goodness nobody promised chocolate milky from me this weekend. I had quite enough "MILKY! MILKY! MILKY!" with my usual flavoring option. Spontaneous weaning my patootie!
Speaking of milky, my sock pal wrote to say that she got my socks. But it's even cooler than that. She's wearing them to a LLL meeting in Bei-freakin'-jing China. In a YURT (she swears this is true). The innernet: I crazy-luv u.
Thank you for all the sympathy on Wednesday. I'm glad you all got a laugh from my pain. No, seriously, I am glad. In fact, there were moments during the morning, particularly when the dog ran away, when I thought "I have got to blog about this!" Made it all a little more worthwhile.
Despite rather hyper behavior upon arrival home from school, we had a pretty decent night, thanks to help from my friend Jenn (whom I recently taught to knit, and who is now a major fiber junkie thank you very much). I used to beat myself up about not being able to do it by myself. Now, most of the time, I say, whatever--HELP ME! The more help the better, I think.
Anyway, there has actually been some knitting, a little spinning, and some SEX (Stash Enhancement eXperiences). Let's go to the pictures!
First, and most importantly, the sockapalooza socks are done! 
I liked that little hint Alison dropped that those of us with international recipients should have already sent them out. Hey! Nobody told me! I thought it was a deal where we all mailed them on the same day, not that they were supposed to arrive on the fifteenth. HELP! Anyway, now I'm relieved that my recipient is blogless. I won't have to be shamed by her opening them (on the other side of the world) in April or something. They'll go out tomorrow, OKAY? ;) No, seriously, this was not a full-fledged freakout (I've reserved this week's freakout for the freelance report due next week). It got me focused and got me done.
I'm in that space right now where I have a ton of projects going on (let me finish--I know I always have a ton of projects going on) AND they're all in the middle of the project. You know, that point where the novelty has worn off a bit, but the end does not feel right around the corner? Where you have miles and miles of stockinette or some pattern that you're now accustomed to staring you in the face? You know that point. Despite the fact that starting something new FEELS like it's going to make you feel better, it usually makes me feel worse. It will inevitably get to the same point, and now you've got another project in the doldrum phase. So finishing is the only answer, and thankfully it was quick and easy to finish the socks. Off they go. Buh bye! I keep forgetting I'm getting another pair in their place. Cool.
Also in the doldrums is Clapotis. 
It's fine, but it just has enough more work to go that I can't get excited about it. Actually, technically, I should be starting the decreases on the next repeat. However, a) I have plenty of yarn to do quite a bit more length, b) I feel like it's a bit short to stop now, c) I made it skinnier just so I could avoid running out of yarn (see a) and longer (see b). I got myself into this, now it's time to knit myself out. Also, the yarn is a bit fuzzy (hello, I knew it was mohair when I got it!) and will probably not be good to wear with black, which, unfortunately, is the color I wear pretty much every day. Oh well, it will go with my coat, and um, everything else I'm knitting these days. And I do love the colors. Knitting on...
Not Crap: The Fair Isle has achieved approximately another half-inch, 
so it's photo time, right? I actually have barely worked on it since the class last week, but it has had a bit of work since the last photo. I have some slight concern about the fact that I have abandoned the forest green for the last two bands, but I'm reminding myself that I'm fully committed to getting back to it, in the VERY NEXT BAND in fact. The plan is to go little greenish background, big blueish background, little blueish background, big greenish background, little greenish background, etc. So it's fine. And I'm also starting to accept that I'm probably going to hate each band until I finish it. I haven't decided if I'm going to repeat the designs or just torture myself keep it interesting and do different designs (same color progressions) throughout.
I do have a little regret about this sweater. For the Master Knitter program we have to use the yarns available at Webs, which is fair because the classes are really reasonably priced. But Webs does not carry the full range of Jamieson's or Jamieson & Smith, which are the two really classic Shetland yarns for Fair Isles. I was looking at a color card, and the colors are so much closer together in those yarns, so you wind up with a much less stripey, much more blended effect. In the end, I think it will end up being not crap, despite all of this. And perhaps hell won't have to freeze over before I make another jumperweight fair isle. At least I'll have this sweater to keep me warm in frozen hell while I knit it.
I've squeezed in the odd moment of spinning the bunny blend
roving from the Spa. Don't let this full bobbin fool you--under the bunny is some llama for test-spinning that was on the wheel when I bought it. It's probably a couple of layers deep, that's it. This is the only bobbin I have for this wheel, so I need to wind it off (like, now) to another bobbin and start anew, but again, not really motivated to do it. So that's kind of sitting too. This wheel is noisy, and I have been mostly knitting in front of the TV (I heart TiVO, it figured out that I love Dharma and Greg within a week, can you believe it? I didn't even know it was ON, and I'll forgive it the Elimidate incident, I mean, just because I guiltily watch Survivor, The Apprentice, The Amazing Race, and Project Runway doesn't mean...oh, never mind). Anyway, it's not great for watching TV. Though I love spinning on it--it's so fast and smooth. I'm actually thinking about getting rid of my Lendrum and getting a different portable wheel. I know everyone loves Lendrums, I'm just not sure it's the wheel for me. I need to finish spinning for Rogue first. Another project in the deep freeze.
One thing I am excited about? 
My Shetland roving from a young ewe named Bess arrived in the mail yesterday. Can you believe Donna crammed 3 pounds of fleece in a priority mail envelope? She did. Wow, this fleece? It's beautiful. Incredibly clean, like, does this sheep live outside clean. In between ordering and receiving this fleece I had read a caution in the book In Sheep's Clothing that you should be 
careful of multicolored locks (not multicolored fleece, like from a spotted sheep, but fleece like this where each lock of wool has more than one color in the individual staple), because the color change usually coincides with a "break" in the wool. A break is a stress point where the sheep had some sort of problem (feeding, health, other stress--I think lambing can cause a break too), and it weakens the wool which can cause breakage and general poor quality right down the line, from fiber prep to spinning to knitting to the final garment. I was a little nervous that that might be going on here. I tested the locks by holding them taught and flicking them with my finger, and got a strong "ping" sound, just as the authors recommend. 
Since they sounded wistful about how wonderful it would be to find a fleece with this characteristic that was not damaged, it made me even happier to have found this unique fleece.
Here's a lock right out of the bag (can you see the glistening white section?). And here's the same lock after flick carding, next to a plied yarn spun from what was left behind in the carder. Makes kind of a nice laceweight, eh? In the about five minutes I spent reading about spinning for Shetland lace, I did read that it is primarily from undercoat fibers, so maybe that's not what I should do with the whole fleece. It's hard to imagine spinning 7"
locks that small, but this is where I'm getting over my head with the whole spinning thing. I'm just starting to learn about different breeds and fiber characteristics, and I have mostly spun from commercially prepared rovings and top, so I haven't dealt with sorting a fleece and whatnot. So, all that to say, what do you think? Laceweight for a shawl? 
Worsted for a--well it's 3 lbs of raw fleece so I guess it would be for a vest, I probably couldn't get a sweater out of it, though I suppose it won't lose much weight from washing, since it is nearly greaseless. Or maybe make a lot of socks and hats with it? I'm kind of thinking I should comb it (more stuff to buy and learn to use)--seems a shame to card these beautiful long locks--or maybe just flick-card it and spin away? Or just experiment. Probably what I'll do, and that won't be for a bit of a while. No rush, though it sure is nice to play with! I'd love to hear any advice from experienced spinners.

My enthusiasm about the fleece must have rubbed off because as soon as the carders came out the kids wanted to play. Eleanor was carding, and Henry, of his own accord, and having not been exposed to the concept since last summer, decided to make felt. And tonight he made up a song that went "spin some yarn, spin some yarn, spin some yarn..." These kids are either going to grow up to be master fiber artists, or they'll hate every bit of it. Which do you think? 
Well, slowly but surely, the fair isle continues. I'm done with the ribbing! (I'm done with the ribbing! I'm done with the ribbing!)

I know, it's still just a very small start, but folks, this is very small yarn. Believe it or not, this is progress. I think what I'm learning is that with fair isles, you can't totally judge until the pattern is done. Which is hard, because if it sucks, you've just knitted a few thousand stitches of it. I'm not adoring what I've got so far, but I'm trying not to be too derivative, and when I really thought about it, that swatch was pretty darned derivative.
So I'm working on some different color progressions and some different patterns. And I don't really know how they'll come out. I tried to pick patterns that would come out even with my number of stitches, and you know, they're not. And I'm going to choose not to care--the fronts won't match, sue me--but hey, what's going on? Maybe I counted stitches wrong? I don't know. I should probably re-count them. Yah. Uh huh. Well, I'm not going to rip them out, but I suppose I can pick the right number of repeats or at least put blanks on either side of the button band. The good thing about this whole bottom-up knitting business is that, at least one hopes, by the time you get up around the face where people actually see the pattern, you have figured some of this stuff out. Humor me, will ya?
In other news (yes, even though it often seems otherwise, there are other things going on in my life besides the fair isle), I finished sock #1 for the sockapalooza.
Sock #2 is about an inch into it. Mail date is 3/15. I think I'm okay, though there may be some crunch knitting. I figure I'll get as far as I can on the fair isle before the next Ethnic Knitting class this weekend, then go whole hog on the sock.
And hey, we had a visitor in the backyard this weekend. 
Well, not actually in the backyard, since s/he was just behind the fence. But we have a coyote in the neighborhood. This picture was taken from my dining room window; the coyote was probably 100 feet from my back door. I have seen this critter around 2 or 3 other times, but never this close to our house. My cat stays indoors all winter (not because we make her do so, it's because she's a wimp; she sniffs the air at some point in November, then gives me this look like "excuse me, why don't you do something about this" and stalks back indoors). Come spring, we're going to have an issue. Hopefully the coyote will sumer at the lake or something. Pet worries aside, it was pretty cool to see close up. It's a big one; we weren't sure if it might actually be a wolf, but then when I checked, it turns out there are no wolves in Massachusetts, so that made identification easy. We've seen tons of rabbits, deer, hawks, a tortoise, and even a bear behind our house, but this is a new one. And it's somewhat more menacing than a bear, just because bears range for miles, and coyotes really keep a close territory. Ah well, we'll just talk very seriously to the cat about staying out of trouble. I'm sure that will work.
Work is wacky. I'm having some trouble keeping all the balls in the air, but nobody has yelled at me yet (close, though, with one big screw up at my old job), and I'm hoping things will even out. This week is the first week Rhys is taking any time off, so that makes a huge difference. Wow, it's pretty neat to kiss your kids and wife goodbye at the breakfast table, and it's a far cry from the emotional and logistic insanity of everyone going off to their own thing in the morning. I'm not saying being home with little kids is easy (ha!), and neither is having responsibility for supporting an entire family on your own, but there are some aspects of the one-income, SAHM family that are pretty darned appealing. In other words, it's nice to have a wife. :) I stayed at work today...until I was ready to leave. Imagine. Back to juggling tomorrow, though: possible snow day, one sick kid, both of us have to work. Sigh. September, when I become essentially unemployed, can't come too soon. On the good side, I calculated my first bill for the new job and yeah, I did a good deal. Yay me.
Off to watch the rest of the finale of Project Runway, even though I read a spoiler on the GLB-Knit list. And knit. All fair isle, all the time. Except when I'm spinning...
The spending spree continues: I have a new computer. I wrangled a loss-leader out of Circuit City, despite their attempts to tell me it was a piece of crap and sell me something that cost twice as much. I also have camera software for my old camera, and have downloaded pics off that camera. I haven't installed the new camera software yet.

Did I already show you my FO pics of the Aran Sandal Socks? Well, if not, here they are. They actually felted in the wash, so now they fit perfectly. This gives me pause, since it was supposed to be superwash yarn (Colorado Vail on closeout at Webs), but it was good in my case. Bummer I have to hand-wash from now on though.

Before leaving town, I went to Webs to pick up my own donation of a door prize (it's a free event, so I figured I'd do my part). I donated a tote bag that said "Knitting: Low in Calories, High in Fiber." I asked if they wanted to donate anything from the store, and they put together a lovely package of a mug, needles, a skein of malabrigio (manos-like kettle-dyed yarn), and a cute little bag.
It was very cool, because the Webs prize was won by someone who had lost all her addi turbos earlier in the day, and who was very broken up about it. Hopefully this helped a bit. People also took up a collection to help her.
A lot of the time at Spa was just spent sitting around knitting and spinning. As I said, I spent a lot of time playing with the Merlin Tree's wheels, but I also met some other knitters and spinners. Frances and her friend Edith were particularly cool, and I gave Frances a quick spindling lesson right before we left. Frances was so quick that I was able to do it with Eleanor in tow, and you know that means QUICK. Here she is, with her very first yarn and her lovely Grafton Fibers spindle. Spinners, you know that smile.
Eleanor even picked out some yarn herself. I am now required to knit scarves for the short people.

Before I took photos for this post, I would not have thought I could title it progress. But despite severe ADD knitting, I have actually moved forward on a few things. I am exceeding even my own ADD standards. I usually have a multitude of active projects, but I typically concentrate on only one in a given day, or at least in a given sit-down knitting session. Lately I've been picking up a different sock every time I knit. Despite this, I'm making some progress.
Most importantly, I have finished my spinning for the TSF doorprizes. Here, spokesmodeled by Sir Henry, is my Fil Sans Frontieres (avec fils, and trust me, he is often entirely sans frontieres, sigh).
It's wool, but I'm not sure of the breed. I spun it semi-worsted, rather tightly, at about a DK weight. Should be good for socks. It's almost exactly 100 yards (though unfortunately the skeins are not of equal size--there was an incident involving spinning an energized yarn from both sides of a center-pull ball; I'm not really ready to talk about it). Not enough for a pair of socks, but maybe enough to stripe some socks, eh? I hope they go to good use. Here's a shot of the fil without the fils.
And speaking of door prizes, check it out, I won! Trust me, I'm running to email so I can choose my groovy beaded handle. How psyched am I? Whoo hoo! In sock news, like I said, progress. I have one complete Aran sock, and another up to the heel flap. See all the help I get here? Those are Eleanor's legs. She's decided that because it is in the double digits F today and we're only getting 6 inches of snow instead of a foot, that a bathing suit would be perfect attire. I figure hey, she's not naked.
I've grafted the first sideways sock, and despite being a bit, um, generous in size, well, it's cool. I won't be doing the alternate toe, because really I don't want to add a millimeter of extra length.
Now we come to my sockapalooza socks. I am resisting, strongly, the temptation to dub these "Socks of Doom." I just don't feel like that's a nice moniker for a sock that will go to an unsuspecting victim recipient. First I tried a stitch that didn't work with the yarn. So I frogged. That's okay, it wasn't an FO, LOL. Then, I cast on for Broadripple. Great. Except I put the cast on, on bamboo DPNs in my pocketbook with two sippy cups, four pull-ups, a change of clothes, two bags of cheese crackers, a box of raisins, a package of tissues, a bag of wipes, my wallet, keys, cell phone, inhaler, and my collection of emergency toys. And chapstick. Can you believe the DPNs BROKE? I mean, really. Such shoddy merchandise.
So I cast on again. And screwed up the pattern. 
Then I ripped and screwed it up again. Trust me, this pattern is NOT difficult. My brain is just impaired. Devoted blog-reader but non-blog-owner Kristen (who says she doesn't have anything to say in a blog and doesn't seem to understand that this has not stopped the rest of us) taught me how to do the magic loop, so I did that and things looked up. Until I got to the end of the garter ripple section, at which point I managed to TURN THE THING INSIDE OUT AND KNIT ON THE INSIDE, thereby confusing myself completely and messing up two rows. Not a big deal, I just ripped and reknit, but this is a new and exciting permutation of the many ways I can screw up while knitting, and I just thought I'd share.
Despite these many setbacks, I actually have over an inch of sock. Don't breathe in its presence. This is a tenuous situation. We're hoping for the best. I'll keep you posted.
Oh my. I just love cables. 
I don't know what it is. They slow me down, of course, but it all just seems so wonderful and I adore the results. I actually have to fix a mistake here, but I don't think I'll need to rip out, I'll just drop some stitches. It's supposed to be stockinette in the center of that big cable, not garter.
The yarn is definitely a tad superwashy--it's Colorado Yarns Vail from Webs. It just feels a bit too much like acrylic, even though it's 100% superwash wool. But it will be easy to care for and maybe I'll make another pair of these in handspun or something.
Socks are so satsfying too. You make progress quickly. Of course, there's that second sock issue. Remember the sideways sox? Just as soon as I get off this cable kick. Oh yeah, and those fixation socks are in the frogpile. I'm just gonna do broadripple. They'll be lovely.
No spinning to report. But the weekend is on its way!
Hey, I have photos! The new camera software has been installed on my work laptop (since my home laptop is developing a palsy and liver spots), and I have successfully downloaded photos. How nice to have camera software designed since the industrial revolution! You wouldn't believe what I had to go through with my old camera to get the pictures downloaded. The only downside to the new camera is a big one: it has an even longer delay before taking the photo than the old one did. What is up with that? It's really terrible for kid pictures, because, you know, they don't stand still for a split-second, much less for three-point-two seconds or whatever it takes between when you click the shutter and it actually snaps. Ah well, I suppose it will be lovely for knitting photography.
Speaking of which, I finished That Damn Sweater, aka the step-BIL's unfinished Xmas gift.
I'll have to get a copy of the photo MIL took of him trying it on, sans neck, Xmas morning, but here it is draped coyly over a chair. I still need to wash and block it, not to mention wrap it, back it in a box, find out his address and ship the damn thing. But it's off my conscience and off my to-do list, and for this, I am grateful.
This was a Lopi pattern (don't have the book number handy, sorry), and I used some yarn (the black) I bought in 1989 to make a sweater that never worked out. At one point I had this sweater attached to a raveled edge of a piece of that sweater, and was just knitting and ripping at the same time. Just call me Sisyphus. The two shades of blue are Brown Sheep Bulky.
I made one pattern modification recommended by Priscilla Gibson-Roberts in Knitting in the Old Way specifically for yoke sweaters. If you've ever worn one, have you noticed that they bind a bit when you lift your arms up over your head? I guess that's because they're the same in front and back. PGR has you do a series of short rows across the back and arms before starting the yoke patterning. Not a big deal to do, and it does make for increased ease of arm movement--I tried it on this morning. PGR also has a wonderful short-row technique that eliminates wrapping. I especially like it for bulky yarns like this, because that wrap really adds bulk in a bulky sweater. All that to say that Knitting in the Old Way is worth the money. It's also the text book for my first Master Knitter class at Webs this spring, which is how I justified buying it.
So I know that all of a sudden socks are au courant. I sweah, I was planning to make them before all this. I don't know why I feel the need to say this, so what if I'm a knitblogging camp follower. I mean really, I enjoy knitalongs for many reasons, mostly the ability to learn pitfalls and share experiences, but also because it's just fun to be part of something. So that said, I'm now a happy joiner of two sockish memes:

I started the Sock it to Me socks a week or two ago with some KPPPM I got in New Hampshire
on an expedition to the Patternworks store (oh, the Koigu selection!).
The two skeins on the lower right are the ones I'm using for Sideways Sox Supreme from XRX's Socks, Socks, Socks. I can't find a photo from the book online, but here is a partial photo of just the toes from the pattern author's website. You can see the vertical striping. I will be using the alternate toe, by the way.
I kind of like the subtlety of the color combination of the socks pictured in the link above (same as in the book), and I had hoped that my color combination would have the same effect, since the variegated yarn has some of the exact dark blue in the solid. Unfortunately, that dark blue makes infrequent appearances in the variegated, so it really doesn't blend in the same way. Slightly disappointing, but once I got used to it, it was okay.
So, I've finished knitting the first sock, and now it's time to do it again.
Oh yeah, and graft the whole thing together. And make the toe. The thing is this, though: the sock is not completely symmetrical. I don't know how well you can see it in this picture, but part of the heel shaping involves short rows through just the heel, adding thickness to four of the stripes on either side of the bottom of the heel. On one side, it adds to two variegated stripes, and on the other side, it adds to two solid stripes. I think the designer decided on perfect symmetry of shaping rather than perfect symmetry of color, which I can respect. So if I make two socks the same, I will have two identical socks, not two mirror image socks. We will now trigger our obsessive-compulsive disorder. Given the elegance of the design, I'm guessing this was an issue of pattern publishing, not an oversight. But I'd like to make the second sock so it mirrors the first.
So, my feeble brain is having a little trouble figuring out how to do this. Do I start the chart in the middle so that I'm seaming on the opposite side of the sock? I think that will take care of the issue of the seams both facing inward (though if I graft well, it won't be an issue), but I'm thinking my stripes will still be identical, not mirrored, right? So do I do that PLUS move the heel shaping over by one row, I think that would at least LOOK right. The toe short rows would still be identical, but frankly that doesn't bug me as much, not sure why. Or maybe I just need to completely reverse the solid and variegated rows, though that would mess up the top edging.
So, does anyone with a geometry brain have advice on how I could make these socks truly mirror image? I feel a little dumb, like I should be able to look at this and figure it out, but my brain keeps getting muddled. That's a familiar feeling, so I won't worry too much about it. I think I'll also email the pattern designer and see if she has any thoughts. I'm sure this will be a good excuse to stall my knitting the second sock for at least a week or two.
Meanwhile, I've also become a sockapaloozer, and have been matched up with a secret sock pal. Is it completely lame to be disappointed that she doesn't have a blog? I just feel kind of disappointed that I won't get to see pictures of her showing off her new socks. I suppose maybe she'll send me some by email. That would be cool, then I could post them on *my* blog. Well, whoever has me, be assured that your creations will be modeled for, erm, all the people who read my blog...okay, well, I'll post pictures and we can both look at them, okay?
So I've started a home-brewed sock pattern for my pal, 
using Cascade Fixation yarn purchased from One Fine Yarn (wow, amazing customer service). The pattern stitch is from Barbara G. Walkers Third Treasury, and is called Daisy Cluster #1. It's a little busy with the variegated yarn, but I am not sure I've given it enough of a chance yet. It does seem to provide some anti-pooling effect, and I'm all for that.
I am almost certainly going lose the ribbing on the top of the sock. Since the pattern stitch is actually *more* elastic than the ribbing, the ribbing ends up poofing out instead of drawing in. Not what I was going for. Who knows, though. I'm going to wait until I'm done with the first sock to decide (and I'll make the legs long enough that it will work either way), since there's this sort of fluted thing going on at the top with the combination of the wider ribbing and then the stretchy cast-on I used from The Twisted Sisters' Sock Workbook. It might look kind of cool. We shall see.
Finally, there's the handspun Rogue cardi.
I have not posted over at the Rogue knitalong, but I am actually keeping rather busy with this project. I'm sure everyone else over there will be long-done before I even start knitting, but it hasn't dropped from my consciousness at all. I have learned my lesson after knitting a handspun sweater in which my yarn suddenly changed grist when I took a long break from spinning to knit half the sweater. This time I'm spinning it all before I start knitting.
Pictured here is one 150-meter skein, one 240-meter skein, and two bobbins of singles to make another 240-meter skein. Well, the one on the left isn't quite 240 meters yet. So I figure I'm maybe 40% done with spinning.
I had originally planned to dye this yarn (another reason to spin it all before knitting), but I've decided I love the creamy goodness of the Blue-Faced Leicester roving, and I'm going to leave it as is. The more I work with it, the more I love BFL. Long staple, so, so soft...I will be a danger to myself and my bank account when shearing and festival season comes around this year. Heaven help me if I spring for a drum carder!
I do need to save some room on my to-do list for a project for my master knitter class. My folk knitting class involves a project with a due date, and right now I'm thinking a traditional fair isle sweater. So I know I'll need a good chunk of time this spring to work on that.
Well, back to the salt mines and the surveys...I hope to come up for air again soon, particularly to show off cute pictures of the kids spokesmodeling the lovely cotton cashmere yarn Jenifer RAOK'd me!
